The first time I bought press-ons, I eyeballed a medium based on how thick my fingers looked. They went on fine — not tight, not loose. But the almond-shaped C-curve sat completely flat against the middle of my nail bed while both edges floated above the sidewalls, like a roof that doesn't quite meet the walls. The Full Picture

Layer 1: The Surface Problem — Why Wrong Size Is the #1 Fail

Scroll through r/Nails or r/PressOnNails for ten minutes and you will see the same complaint over and over: "I measured my width, ordered the right size, and they still don't fit."[1]

Here is what I learned by laying out every single size in every single MOONLEE shape side by side: width is the least variable dimension across shapes. A size S in almond is 14.2 mm wide. A size S in coffin is 14.4 mm wide. That 0.2 mm difference is negligible. But the length difference between the same two S sizes? 3.1 mm. And the inner curve depth? 0.8 mm difference in how much the nail bends downward to match your natural C-curve.

Layer 2: The Mechanism — Why Your Nail Bed Is Different from Everyone Else's

The Jansen 2000 study on fingernail length and hand performance measured fifteen women (mean age thirty — basically us) and found that even 1 cm of extra nail length measurably reduced active range of motion in the finger joints and slowed finger manipulation speed.[3] Long nails change how your hands work — and your natural nail length, shape, and curvature are unique to your hand, so a press-on that doesn't account for that will fight against your finger's natural mechanics.

The 2005 Yan et al. nail measurement study, published in the Chinese Journal of Anatomy, measured 255 subjects and found that nail length cannot be predicted from hand length. The researchers established a regression equation for thumb nail length based on the other fingers — meaning even your own four fingers do not follow a simple proportional rule.[4] You cannot look at your index finger and estimate your thumb.

This is why three dimensions matter, not one:

  • Width — prevents side leakage. If the nail is too wide, edges lift. If it is too narrow, the sidewalls are exposed and the seal breaks.
  • Length — determines leverage force. A longer nail creates more torque on the adhesive bond with each tap, grab, or bump. If the length is mismatched, the nail works against itself.
  • Inner Curve — the C-curve match determines seal. This is the least talked-about dimension and the most important. If the press-on's curve is flatter than your natural nail, the center touches but the edges float. If it is too curved, you feel pressure in the middle and the nail rocks.

Why coffin and almond differ: Coffin nails narrow at the tip but keep width through the body, so the same size S requires more overall length to maintain the silhouette. Almonds narrow symmetrically from the sides — less material, shorter tip-to-base ratio. Rich P's 1999 work on nail cosmetics and esthetics noted that shape-driven length variation is one of the most overlooked factors in nail product design, because manufacturers prioritize width standardization for inventory simplicity.[5]

The short round exception: Short rounds are deliberately compact — shorter length, rounder tip, less inner curve. They are the most forgiving shape for first-time users because the shorter lever arm puts less stress on the adhesive. But they also have a flatter inner curve, so if your nails have a pronounced C-curve, even a correctly sized short round will feel loose at the edges.

The stiletto puzzle: Stiletto in size M is the longest and narrowest combination — 17.2 mm length with only 13.1 mm width. The length-to-width ratio is extreme. This is the only shape where I recommend going up one size and filing the sidewalls, because the narrow tip already sacrifices edge contact surface.

Layer 4: The Solution — How the Database Actually Works for You

The nail size database is not a static chart. It is a lookup tool designed for the way real hands work:

  1. Find your width range first. Measure the widest part of each nail bed with a flexible ruler or the credit-card tool. Write down all ten measurements. Your thumbs will be wider than your pinkies — that is normal.
  2. Look up each shape's corresponding sizes. The database shows width, length, and inner curve for all four sizes (XS, S, M, L) across all 16 shapes. You will see that your width measurement maps to S in coffin but M in short round — because short rounds run narrower at the same length.
  3. Check the inner curve column. This is the step everybody skips. If your natural nail has a visible C-curve, look for shapes where your size's inner curve depth is 1.5 mm or more. If your nails are flat (common in wide nail beds), look for depths under 1.2 mm.

I will give you a real example from my own hands: I wear an M in coffin (14.8 mm width, 16.1 mm length, 1.6 mm inner curve) but an S in round (14.2 mm width, 12.5 mm length, 1.1 mm inner curve). Why does the same size feel different on different nail shapes?

Because each shape has a different length-to-width ratio and inner curve. A medium almond is narrower at the tip than a medium coffin, so it sits tighter even though the base width is almost identical. The difference in length also changes how the nail lever-arms against your natural nail during daily use — longer shapes like coffin or stiletto put more torque on the tip bond.

What is inner curve and why does it matter?

Inner curve measures how much the press-on curves downward to match your natural nail bed's C-curve. If the inner curve is too flat, the nail sits center-touch with both edges floating — that is the "roof" effect I described in the opening story. If it is too curved, you feel pressure in the center and the nail rocks side to side instead of sitting flush. What size should I pick if my measurements fall between two sizes?

Go up. A slightly larger nail can be filed at the sides. A slightly smaller nail will leave gaps that trap water and cause pop-offs. Use a 180-grit file in one direction (not back and forth) and check the fit every few strokes. Removing 0.3 mm from each sidewall is usually enough.
